The events of the past two years have shown us that health, global economics, social systems, and the very world we live in are simultaneously fragile and resilient. With this backdrop, industrial transformation and collaboration have never been more urgent. Many companies are making bold commitments to net-zero, diversity and inclusion, and responsible technology to accelerate the necessary changes in response to the climate emergency, inequality, and nature loss.

OUR PLEDGE TO SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

SUSTAINABILITY GOALS

Our sustainability strategy is grounded in our purpose to provide our customers with terminal operations expertise while making essential innovations that support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

As a leader in multimodal operations, we embrace the accelerated pace of learning, change, and expectations worldwide and within our communities and workforce. Conversations about sustainability are quickly evolving, and we are listening and responding, internally and externally, to increase the speed and scale of our actions and impact.

Our pledge to sustainable environmental management includes:

  • Monitoring and reducing the use of resources ​
  • Research renewable energy sources and place preference on them rather than non-renewable​
  • Minimize waste and reuse materials where feasible​
  • Actively seek out and purchase from local vendors​

FROM PLEDGES TO PROGRESS

Over the past year, we have seen the effects of climate change in yet another unprecedented fire season, along with devasting storms, deep freezes, and disastrous flooding, all while facing the continued spread of a global pandemic.

A JOURNEY TO NET-ZERO IS A COMPLEX ONE

We’ve identified concrete first steps, which include measuring, disclosing, and setting targets for emissions, accelerating our search for low-carbon opportunities, and innovative technology targeted at reducing dwell and redundant dwell equipment moves.

SOLAR POWER

Choosing energy providers with an emphasis on those that source as much energy as possible from renewable sources. Researching where we can implement own solar panel systems at our depot locations.

RECYCLING

In 2021, we recycled 5,724 gallons of Hydraulic Fluid and 987 tons of scrap metal. We’re looking for ways to improve recycling programs at depot locations and increase our repurposed waste.

ELECTRIC HOSTLERS

In 2021, the Stockton intermodal site we operate became one of the first of its kind to become 100% electric in hostler operations. We’re continuing to search for more opportunities to make the switch to electric vehicles at other locations. We’ve specified 15 EVs for a site in San Bernardino.

WILDLIFE

We train our depot personnel not to enter nature areas around the facility and how to remove any wildlife that comes on property safely. Locations with surrounding green areas installed hummingbird feeders, bird houses, and planted trees to support the surrounding habitats.

SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT

We ensure that our partners and suppliers are engaged in sustainability; when possible, we select local vendors.

EMISSIONS

We monitor our emissions by tracking fuel consumption at every location—active maintenance protocols phase out older diesel engines for the more environmentally friendly tier 4 engines.

POLLUTION/CONTAMINATION

Our primary exposure is soil/water contamination from equipment leaking fuel, oil, or hydraulic fluid. We reduce this exposure with maintenance repair practices to ensure equipment is not leaking and storing all harmful liquids in secondary containment. Containment/cleanup supplies are available at all operations if needed.

WATER USE

We track our water consumption at our depot locations and are searching for ways to reduce this by water reclamation and reducing unnecessary usage.

CLIMATE RESILIENCE

We are developing climate-related risk assessments and disclosures to improve accessibility and meet evolving reporting guidelines and rising stakeholder expectations.

We understand the importance and urgency of mapping climate-related risks to relevant enterprise risks and developing line-of-sight goals for business units and critical functions.

We leverage third-party tools like Tomorrow.io’s weather and climate security platform and Samsara’s fleet tracking telematics to identify, assess, characterize, and manage climate-related risks.

SUSTAINABILITY BENCHMARKING & DOCUMENTATION

Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmarking (GRESB) is a global agency that assesses the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance of assets.

More than 100 institutional investors use GRESB data to engage with investment managers on their sustainability performance for real estate and infrastructure investments.
