ITS ConGlobal Replaces Diesel Rail Yard Hostlers in Stockton with Net-Zero EVs
STOCKTON, Calif., October 29, 2021— ITS ConGlobal (“ITSC”) celebrates Energy Awareness Month by announcing the full replacement of diesel-powered yard hostlers with electric vehicles (EVs) at BNSF Railway’s Stockton Intermodal Facility.
This effort highlights BNSF and ITS ConGlobal’s proactive pursuit of opportunities to test and deploy technology and equipment that protects the environment in the communities where they operate.
In 2018, ITS ConGlobal pursued incentive dollars under California’s Proposition 1B to replace diesel-powered equipment and HVIP, CORE programs to help offset the upfront cost of purchasing an EV vehicle and installing charge infrastructure. The EV pilot program began in Stockton when ITSC took delivery of six EV trucks and three charging units in 2019.
When additional incentive dollars became available under CORE in February of 2020, ITSC applied for funding to help purchase 15 additional BYD hostlers. BNSF committed support for the pilot program by investing in 15 Heliox charging units to add fast and efficient electric charging capabilities for the hostlers. The hostlers and chargers are now onsite, making BNSF’s Stockton location one of the first electrified intermodal yard fleets.
ITSC will continue to explore total reliance on EVs and phase out older hostlers as feasible while keeping a limited number on reserve to ensure operational uptime.
BNSF has transported freight in California since 1883 and has strong ties to the area. Rail freight moves 40% of all U.S. products and only contributes 2.3% of transportation greenhouse gases.
As one of the largest transportation support companies in the United States, ITS ConGlobal has an essential responsibility to build a more sustainable supply chain. Our EV pilot programs in California have laid the groundwork for deploying even more net-zero solutions across our operating network of terminals and depot/container yards.
“Sustainability is embedded in our business strategy, culture, and mission,” shared ITSC CEO Brant Ring. “In addition to our EV equipment, we are investing in smart, connected technologies that further optimize our processes. From load planning to telematics, we are reducing vehicle run and idle times while improving equipment maintenance.”
